Scientific Research and Development Laboratory Intern

Reports to: Product R&D Laboratory Supervisor




Phigenics, LLC is recruiting a scientific intern for their Research and Development department in Reno, Nevada. The laboratory is in the Bioentrepreneurial Laboratory on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. The focus of the R&D department is to expand on existing Phigenics technologies and develop novel detection strategies for environmental waterborne pathogens.  

In this position, the Research and Development Laboratory Intern can expect to participate in a wide range of scientific experiments from molecular biology, microbiology, and chemistry. Working knowledge of all or most of these subjects is a must. The organisms used in experimentation are classified as Biosafety Level II organisms. This position requires the incumbent to take or have taken Bloodborne Pathogens training from the University of Nevada, Reno due to the nature of the organisms involved. A current University Laboratory Safety certificate is also required. This position requires a self-driven individual who is looking to make an impact on a quickly expanding industry field.  

Essential Functions

  • Traditional microbiological plating and culture techniques
  • Amoeba culturing
  • PCR
  • Notebook keeping

Required Competencies

  • Basic knowledge in molecular detection methods including traditional PCR and qPCR.
  • Basic understanding of water disinfection techniques and chemistry.
  • Candidates must be proficient in the Microsoft office suite, as well as have a firm grasp on basic statistical analysis and data presentation. 

Preferred Competencies

  • Experience with oxidant disinfection techniques in water management systems a plus.
  • Experience working with waterborne bacteria.
  • Experience with DNA and protein sequence analysis software is a plus.
  • Working laboratory experience outside of the classroom.

Work Environment

The Scientific Research and Development Laboratory Intern will perform laboratory duties as assigned by the Product R&D Laboratory Supervisor. Duties will include scientific experimentation and data analysis. This is a small, multifaceted R&D team, and as such, each member is expected to participate in all aspects of the commercial development process. Other laboratory duties such as dishwashing, media making, autoclaving, and decontamination of surfaces are expected to be performed as needed. This role will be required to attend biosafety training due to the nature of the organisms involved 

Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkThis is a part-time position. Ideally, days of work are Monday through Friday, 4 hours per day between the hours of 8 AM and 7 PM. We will be flexible as to accommodate a student's schedule.


No travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience

  • Currently a junior or senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in Biotechnology or Microbiology from a four-year college or university with a 3.0+ grade point average.
  • Prior experience in Biotechnology or Microbiology a plus
